The Church in Smyrna
In this sermon, Pastor Keith Miller walks through Revelation 2:8–11 and Jesus’ letter to the suffering church in Smyrna. Smyrna was a wealthy, powerful, and fiercely loyal city to Rome, where emperor worship placed Christians under intense pressure to compromise. Refusing to confess “Caesar is Lord” brought suspicion, slander, poverty, imprisonment, and even death.
Yet Jesus gives no rebuke to this church. Instead, He reveals Himself as “the first and the last, who died and came to life.” He knows their tribulation, their poverty, and their suffering—but He also declares that they are rich. Their security is not found in comfort, possessions, reputation, or earthly safety, but in Christ and the inheritance He guarantees.
This passage reminds us that Satan may rage, but he does not rule. Suffering is real, but it is measured. Loss is painful, but it is not ultimate. Jesus calls His people to be faithful unto death, promising the crown of life to those who endure.
